Korea has been on the board since 1987, except for one term from 2003 to 2007. Other countries elected in the Asia-Pacific group include Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and Thailand.

The ministry said it shows the international community's recognition of Korea's contribution to UNESCO's major goals, such as improving education worldwide, protecting the world's heritage, and achieving world peace and sustainable development.
