Culture Zone: Horror Flicks

Welcome back.
As is the custom on Fridays, our Yoo Jihae is in the studio to tell us about what's happening on the cultural front in the country.
Hi, Jihae.
What do you have for us this week?
Hello, Sunhee.
For this week's Culture Zone, we'll look at one of the best ways to stay out of the heat that has been gripping the nation so far this summer.
Horror films, which have long been a staple of summer movies with some already in theaters and more still to come.
Well here is a look at some to look out for.
Marnie Watson sentenced for killing her cop husband in self-defense is granted an early release but is chained to her electronic ankle bracelet that keeps her within a 100-foot radius of her home for the rest of her sentence.
Her late husband's partner keeping track of her every move and a blossoming romance are the least of her problems because now she has to deal with a dead husband that's seeking revenge.
REC, derived from the blinking text showing that a camera is recording, is a Spanish take on 'The Blair Witch Project's first-person-style filming where an ambitious young TV reporter and her cameraman tag along with the 911 rescue team for live coverage involving a sick old woman.
But when they reach her building, they hear horrifying screams and the long nightmare begins.
Home sweet home?
Well not in this film.
Champagne. Rose petals. Candlelight.
A night which was supposed to be a celebration of the happy couple goes horribly wrong with a knock on the door and a haunting young girl's voice.
Based on a true story, known as the Keddie Cabin Murders that took place in 1981, the question remains "Will they escape?"

And I heard that horror flicks aren't the only genre that can bring chills to hot a summer night.
That's right.
If you are not into films, try a horror play instead where in a dimly lit theater, a series of grotesque and mysterious stories are told in an interwoven omnibus-style.
With actors dressed up as ghosts abruptly jumping out from behind the seats, hair-raising sound effects and specially-designed props, the play aims to offer a unique and dynamic horror experience that effectively stimulates the five senses.
The 80-minute performance starts at 10:30 pm and goes until just about midnight.
Audience members will be exposed to horror beyond their imagination and surely feel their body temperature drop.
(ONE-SHOT)
And we know slasher-films would not be slasher-films if there was no blood, body parts flying around, chain-saw decapitation and gory cadavers.
Well I met up with Mr. Kang Dae-young, a special makeup artist who has been perfecting his craft in films like "Green Fish" and TV dramas like 'Evil Twin' as well as numerous other projects over the past 35 years.

"I think of myself as God.
As God is the creator of all things, I too use my craft to create all things.
For instance, I can turn a beautiful woman into a wretched old hag and even turn men into beasts. I have tried everything and anything.
I honestly don't see much difference between myself and God".

"I delve into numerous subjects and study them in depth.
But above all, I believe crossing boundaries between reality and fiction is the key".

"I have never felt afraid of my creations.
Since my goal is to make it look more haunting and gory, I am not scared by them obviously.
So, I am always on the lookout for something that is even more dreary and grim".

"Once while our filming crew was out for dinner, we put makeup on the actors and turned the lights off.
When they came back from eating and turned the lights on, it scared the daylights out of them.
We pull these kinds of practical jokes from time to time".

"Special effects makeup doesn't have a long history here but our skills are not that far behind other countries.
Obviously, we are not able to compete with Hollywood blockbusters that invest millions of dollars but in terms of artistry, we are extremely skillful.
We use the same materials they use and have rigorous standards for precision and craftsmanship.
Therefore, Korea's makeup industry is second to none".

Well thank you for the report, Jihae.
See you again next week.
My pleasure.
