August breaks cinema record

According to numbers published by Korean Film Council (KOFIC) about the first eight months of 2009, Korean cinemas earned an unprecedented KRW 153,800,000,000 (little over US$ 124 million) last month August.

As many as 21.4 million Koreans visited cinemas in August, 43.2% of the population. Due to the recent price hike of KRW 1,000; Korean cinemas accumulated KRW153,800,000,000 instead of KRW 136,700,000,000.

"Haeundae" and "Take Off" were mainly responsible for the record breaking performance of cinemas in August. The two films account for 60.4% of the sold tickets, stated KOFIC. Thanks to "Haeundae" and "Take Off", Korean films held a market share of 67% in August. It is the first time in eighteen months that Korean films occupied more than 60% of the market. Sleeper hit "The Chaser" lead Korean cinema to its previous over 60% market share in February 2008.
