In an interview with BBC Korea, Yoo Ah-in said, "There was an incident last year during which I started with the word zucchini and said I was a feminist..." He hesitated and said, "I don't really know".

The 'zucchini incident' is an argument he had netizens on Twitter. A Twitter user posted, "Yoo Ah-in is a difficult friend to have. I'll have too many thoughts when I see a zucchini in the fridge and get all emotional". Then Yoo Ah-in commented, "Have you been hit by a zucchini before?"

Then there was an uproar saying that being hit with a zucchini was an aggressive expression and that Yoo Ah-in was the typical patriarchal Korean man. Yoo Ah-in argued that he didn't mean anything when he said that and disputes continued for over a week.

In the BBC interview, Yoo Ah-in said, "I didn't even know if the Twitter user was a man or woman and I had just made a joke, but that turned out to be a big issue. I didn't think I wanted to apologize to anyone who would turn such a joke into a weapon and twist its meaning. I still think so".

"Feminism is a very important movement and I think human rights are something we in this generation should call attention to". Still, he seemed skeptical about all this turning into block logic or into an aggressive movement.

"I am careful about that incident, but I have a mother too. I have seen my mother be put in unjust situations and I also had to endure discriminative love. I have to be feminist for sure. That's what I wanted to say".

"Men are not beings who discriminate women and women are not victims. We have to co-exist and I think we have to think about it deeply and find a way to cooperate".

Yoo Ah-in ended the argument last year by saying he thinks of it as performance art. "The world becomes more affluent just by watching the difference between us. Everyone is careful, but important discussions are being made and I think our behavior calls for it".
