Turning Gate and Oasis awarded at Brisbane

Korean films won two of the three major awards presented at the 12th Brisbane International Film Festival, which was held from July 29 to August 10 in Australia. HONG Sang-soo's Turning Gate was presented with the FIPRESCI award, which is the top award given by the primarily non-competitive festival. The FIPRESCI jury, consisting of film critics Chris Fujiwara, Ruth Hessey and Kenichi Okubo, praised the film for "the subtlety of its characterisations, for the freshness of its narrative style and for the simplicity and elegance of its embrace of ambiguity".

Meanwhile, LEE Chang-dong's Oasis won the festival's NETPAC Award for Asian cinema. The jury cited the film's "powerful portrait of social outcasts in present-day Korea, its outstanding performances and its poetic touches of fantasy in a strongly realistic setting".
