Tri-National Youth Film Festival to Open in Seoul

A film festival for young directors from Korea, China, and Japan will be held in Seoul. At the First Korea International Youth Film Festival (KIYFF), which is to be held at Ignatius Hall of Sogang University, Seoul from Tuesday to Saturday and sponsored by the Research Center for Korean Youth Culture (RCKYC), 100 movies and animated films directed and produced by film directors under the age of 25 from the three countries will be shown.
Different from existing youth film festivals that simply invite and screen previously released movies without any deliberation and competition, the directors have to exhibit their work under a common theme, "The Beauty of Peace", and wait for an awarding of prizes following a deliberation.

The most attention-grabbing part of this festival is that 23 movies produced by Chinese university students will be exhibited and screened. It will be the first time in Korea that movies produced by Chinese youth will be shown.

"We had great difficulty in attracting the films as the regulations in China are very severe in making films, such as getting permission from government in advance", said executive officer Kim Sung-woo, adding, "We will be able to understand the true heart of China described from the viewpoint of Chinese youth".

Besides the Chinese films, 30 movies made by youth from Japan's Osaka Art College and Japan Film School will also be shown.

Besides the screening of the works on exhibition, a special screening of silent films, exhibition of movie posters, and meeting with Korean, Chinese and Japanese directors have been prepared as well.

The chief of the research department of RCKYC, Kim Ok-sun, who took charge of the organizing committee, said, "Seeing how the beauty of peace is described from the viewpoint of youth, the festival will be a deeply meaningful place where we can compare cultures".
