Ticket sales up in first quarter 2010

KOFIC's Korean box office statistics for the first quarter of 2010 show a 30.1% rise in ticket revenues compared to the same period last year. The success of 3D Hollywood blockbusters, which charge a premium rate, and a bump in general ticket prices that took place last summer, contributed to the increased revenue.

Total admissions for the first quarter also rose by 7.3% compared to the year before. Korean films kept a strong presence throughout the first quarter despite tough competition from Hollywood heavyweights Avatar and Alice in Wonderland. Five of the top ten films during the period were Korean titles with "Secret Reunion" at No.2, "JEON WOO CHI : The Taoist Wizard" at 3, "Harmony" at 4, "No Mercy" at 8 and "Parallel Life" at No.9.

Overall, Korean market share was slightly lower than the year previous, down to 44.3% from 45.1% in Q1 2009. February was the strongest month, with local share peaking at 57.2%, due largely to hit local thriller "Secret Reunion" and successful drama "Harmony".
