"The King and The Clown" Targets Overseas Film Market

A local proverb says, "Things which are Korean in every way are most fit for global adaptation". The film "The King and the Clown" is expected to prove this proverb true once again.

Since its release, "The King and the Clown" (directed by Lee Joon-ik and produced by Eagle Pictures/Cine World) has already attracted more than 2 million viewers nationwide. The producers of the movie are now targeting the overseas film market and are also pushing to present it to foreign film festivals.

An official from the production agency of "The King and the Clown" said, "CJ Entertainment, in charge of overseas marketing, believes that 'King and The Clown' is highly likely to be invited to the competition division of overseas film festivals. We understand that CJ is currently eyeing two or three such festivals before making a decision".

Accordingly, some people predict that four years after the film "Chihwaseon" (2002) won an award, "The King and the Clown", another historical film, will likely also win an award and enhance national prestige.

"Chihwaseon" directed by Im Kwon-taek, won the best director award at the competition division of the Cannes International Film Festival in 2002.

As Chinese director Chen Kaige's film "Farewell My Concubine" (1993), adapted from a Beijing opera, has successfully advanced into the global market, "The King and the Clown" is also expected to achieve a strong performance in overseas sales.

"Foreign audiences will likely be attracted by this film that features performances by clowns, including tight rope dancing, and allows a glimpse into the life at the Joseon royal court. We expect that many countries will show interest in the film, although it will not likely fetch high prices as did other films starring 'hallyu' stars", said an official from the production agency of "The King and the Clown".
