Symposium on "Emperor of the Sea" Chang Bo-bo Held in Seoul

The Korea International Trade Association (KITA), the "Emperor of The Sea" Chang Bo-go Memorial Society, and the Samsung Economic Research Institute jointly hosted a symposium entitled "Emperor of The Sea Chang Bo-bo, a Global Strategist" at the COEX in Seoul on the afternoon of June 8. This symposium was first suggested by KITA President Kim Jae-chul, well-known to be an admirer of Chang Bo-go. In a speech, Kim highly praised Chang Bo-go as "a strategist who implemented a national development plan based on international trade 1,200 years ago".

Kim Ho-sung, president of Seoul National University of Education, said, "At that time, Cheonghaejin, the base of Chang Bo-go's headquarters, was a complex of civilian, military, and industrial production that provided comprehensive trade-related services. Such a composite service model is urgently needed for present-day Korea, sandwiched between the goals of less-developed countries and pressure from advanced countries".

Han Chang-soo, a senior researcher at the Samsung Economic Research Institute, said, "Chang Bo-go was a paragon among entrepreneurs who endlessly seek challenges toward new possibilities. He was a global CEO 1,200 years ago who established a global network by linking Shilla people residing in Korea, China and Japan, while valuing technologies such as shipbuilding and the art of navigation".

Hwang Sang-suk, president of http://ww.segye.com , said, "Chang Bo-go grew as a global strategist thanks to his experience with diverse foreign cultures in the Chinese Tang Dynasty. We should prepare an educational system for our young people to practice foreign languages and active business culture in order to gain success in international business".

The ceremony was attended by some 600 participants, including the minister of maritime affairs and fisheries Oh Geo-don, Oh's predecessor Chang Seung-woo, various domestic and foreign experts on Chang Bo-go, and a general audience. TV actress Chae Shi-ra, who played Madame Jami in the KBS TV miniseries "Emperor of The Sea", officiated at the opening ceremony.
