Kim Woo-jin and Yoon Sim-deok's acquaintanceship began with Hong Nan-pa (Lee Ji-hoon). Kim Woo-jin asked Yoon Sim-deok to sing at his show, but at first she was repulsed by the words Joseon and enlightenment. She didn't want to get into trouble. However, she fell for the man named Kim Woo-jin and the patriotism he had.

However, an ordeal laid ahead for Kim Woo-jin's theater group. The Japanese police raided them and cornered Kim Woo-jin for being from Joseon. Tomoda (Lee Joon-ki) tried to intervene, but the Japanese police were stubborn. They didn't care about the theater gathering; it was more important to them if or not the people were from Joseon. Kim Woo-jin replied them in the Joseon language and this made them even angrier. They yelled at him to speak in Japanese, but he continued to say, "I am speaking my mother tongue".

The police ripped up all the scripts and turned the place upside down. They warned, "If you are caught doing something funny, we will punish you severely". After they left, the actors said they were scared and wanted to quit and they didn't want anyone to get in trouble because of them.

Yoon Sim-deok saw that Kim Woo-jin had turned bitter and said, "Why are you all so scared? We were happy to be able to be on stage on our land in our language. There won't be anymore trouble. We should try this once again". Kim Woo-jin watched as she brought the people back together once again.

The show was over, but Kim Woo-jin was arrested as the leader of an association of theatrical tour. The script had been censored, but the line "We had freedom 10 years ago, now there's no freedom in this land" had been the problem. It meant exactly what it said, but Kim Woo-jin was tortured for speaking the truth.

Meanwhile, "Hymn of Death" is about Joseon's first soprano singer Yoon Sim-deok and her boyfriend and genius playwright Kim Woo-jin's tragic love and his world which is still behind the veils.
