On the sixteenth episode of the MBC drama "Arang and the Magistrate", the reason why Arang (Lee Seo-rim/ Shin Min-a) and Choi Joo-wal (Yeon Woo-jin) didn't recognize each other was revealed.

When Arang asked about the death of Lee Seo-rim, Choi Joo-wal found Hong Ryeon (Kang Moon-young) and asked her if she remembered the girl he arranged marriage with. He said he didn't remember her face as he wasn't interested but if he had killed her too.

Hong Ryeon admitted he did it and Choi Joo-wal suffered from the fact that he killed his own fiancé. Hong Ryeon watched him agonizing and asked, "Why do you even ask Why do you think I always erase your memories of murder?"

Hong Ryeon had been erasing his memory every second week of the leap month by extracting his pure soul. This was a result of his request to her as he couldn't stand the pain. However, the real culprit to Lee Seo-rim's murder was Eun-oh's (Lee Joon-gi) mother Seo (Kang Moon-young).

Lee Seo-rim had been stalking Choi Joo-wal, the man she loved and witnessed Choi Joo-wal, Seo and Hong Ryeon meeting together. As Seo tried to kill Choi Joo-wal , Lee Seo-rim threw herself on him and died. Seo was devastated and gave her body to Hong Ryeon who erased all of their memories.

At the end of the episode, Lee Seo-rim remembered everything about her death. Choi Joo-wal felt guilty not knowing that Lee Seo-rim was Arang and that he didn't kill her.
