Spielberg Looking to Remake "Oldboy"

Hollywood mogul Steven Spielberg is interested in remaking Park Chan-wook's hit film "Oldboy", a 2003 thriller that won the prestigious Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004.

Dreamworks Pictures, the studio founded by Spielberg, is in negotiations to secure the remake rights for the movie from its current holder Mandate Pictures. Under the proposed deal, Universal Pictures would be in charge of distribution.

Spielberg has been looking for a project to direct with actor Will Smith. If the deal goes through, Smith is likely to play the main character, a man kidnapped and held in a private cell for 15 years without explanation. Upon release, he seeks revenge on his unknown captor.

The original stars Korean thespian Choi Min-sik and was an immediate success upon its local release, drawing over 3.2 million admissions. Dreamworks previously bought remake rights to Korean horror, "A Tale of Two Sisters", and is readying to release it early next year.
