Sold to 9 countries, 'Jeonwoochi' sets to dominate box office

"JEON WOO CHI : The Taoist Wizard" has been sold to 9 countries. It is due to release in December. Stars in the film industry gathered together to make the movie. It was produced by director Choi Dong-hoon famous for "Tazza: The High Rollers" and "The Big Swindle" and it starred actors such as Kim Yun-seok, Gang Dong-won, Lim Soo-jung, Yoo Hae-jin and Yum Jung-ah.

Its production cost of around 10 billion won has become hot news. Its 5 min promotion film was unveiled on Nov. 4, the opening day of the 30th American Film Market (AFM). It is one of the biggest film markets in the world. The film alone was enough to make possible pre sale of its full version to a total of 9 countries including 4 from Europe (Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg) and China as well as East Asia such as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei.

This achievement was meaningful given that the pre-sale was made with good conditions attached amid falling exports of Korean films. Moreover the deal was sealed 2 days after the opening of the market. Final sales figures are expected to increase given that 3 days are left before the market closes.

Taking the subject of Taoist magic, the first Korean style hero movie attracted attention from the first day. "As the promotional video was screened dynamic action scenes wowed most of the buyers. They were quite interested in 'Taoist magic' a Korean traditional subject", according to UnitedPictures and M Line Distribution, which are in charge of overseas sales for the film. "Recreation of Jeon Woo Chi, a folk hero, into an undisciplined and rascal hero seemed distinctive and creative to buyers", they added.

The unveiled promotional video hooked buyers even though its CG was not complete. This is interpreted that they found appealing those actions scenes which displayed the East's features including Taoist magic such as occult art performed by the lead role, Jeon Woo Chi with talisman.

In the meantime, distributors which bought the film include Splendid for Germany, the Netherlands and Luxemburg, Viscom Suraya for Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei and New View TV & Media for China. They already bought a slew of Korean titles: Splendid "Haeundae" "A Frozen Flower" and "The Good, the Bad, the Weird"; and Viscom Suraya "Haeundae" and "Chaw". New View TV & Media is recognized as a distributor with a solid background, mostly dealing with distribution of Hollywood movies to China. It recently bought 'My Girlfriend is an Agent'. Sales of "JEON WOO CHI : The Taoist Wizard" are expected to gain momentum as 3 to 4 countries except for Thailand have shown interest in the movie.
