Silmido Takes Best Picture at Blue Dragon Awards

Kang Woo-suk's film "Silmido', the first Korean film to draw 10 million viewers, clinched three awards at this year's Blue Dragon Film Awards for its historical tale of a band of mercenaries trained to infiltrate North Korea.
At the 25th Blue Dragon Film Awards held Monday at the National Theater in Changchung-dong, Seoul, "Silmido" walked away with awards in three of 16 categories, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor (Jung Jae-young).

Showing the popularity of the theme of divided brotherhood between the two Koreas, "Taegukgi" also came away with three awards, for Best Leading Actor (Jang Dong-gun), Cinematography and Editing. "The Big Swindle" fared equally as well with Best New Director (Choi Dong-hoon), Best Script and Best Supporting Actress (Yum Jung-ah).

"Before, I thought I might be more of a film distributor or investor, but from now on, I'll know I'm definitely a director". director Kang Woo-suk.

Kang's leading man was also given a boost by his win. "I was never really fond of awards, but at this moment, I know what it is to want something ... I think I'll never feel ashamed of being an actor again". said Jang Dong-gun, who some critics argued had even outshined his role as a rival "gangpae" in Korea's longest-standing hit, "Friend".

Lee Na-young, who earned the Best Leading Actress Award for her role in "Someone Special", broke down in tears and was unable to continue with her acceptance speech after saying, "This is like a dream".

This year's award ceremony judged 21 Korean films in 16 categories that made their debuts between Nov. 26, 2003 and Oct. 31, 2004.

The award ceremony -- attended by film critics, celebrities and fans alike -- was hosted by actor Jung Joon-ho and actress Kim Hye-soo. Kim, who has drawn attention for her unconventional attire in the six times she has hosted the event, conformed to expectations this time around by donning a one-piece that clearly revealed her shoulders and bust and a lion's mane that swelled out to the width of her shoulders.
