[Policy] Hallyu under threat? Taiwan is exception!

'Hallyu in Taiwan, No problem!' The Hallyu (Korean wave) has been under threat while in Taiwan the popularity of the Korean culture is on the surge. TVXQ gave concert in Taiwan and received warm welcome. The concert was scheduled to be performed but canceled due to Typhoon in May, 2007.
A boy band Super Junior's 'Sorry Sorry' ranked number 1 on various charts, recently. "The popularity of TVXQ (Dong Bang Shin Ki) is higher than that of any other singer in Taiwan. Super Junior's 'Sorry Sorry' became popular as entertainers of Taiwan imitated their dance moves. This indicates that Hallyu is familiar and universal here in Taiwan", said Ra Jin-sun who has studied in Taiwan for 3 years.
The fact that Hallyu appeals to people in Taiwan has been found throughout the history and culture of Taiwan. Taiwan has the longest history in Asia in terms of overseas popularity of Korean culture. In 1997, a craze for learning Korean language was ignited in Taiwan as Clone gained popularity. In 2003, MBC drama 'Dae Jang Geum' (Jewel in the Palace) enjoyed huge popularity in Taipei. The drama deals with food, which coincides with characteristics of Taiwanese people who are interested in food. As a result, Korean restaurants mushroomed.
This trend has been continued. Dramas such as "On Air" and 'Boys over Flowers' and singers such as Big Bang and TVXQ have attracted attention. Their popularity is not explosive or temporary, contrary to the cases of other nations. Hallyu content penetrates the Taiwanese culture and it is well established.
"Contrary to Japan, China and other nations, Hallyu content has been delivered in the form of food languages. That is why it is firmly rooted in daily lives of Taiwanese people. Hallyu in Taiwan has been stabilized and maintained for a long time, which is different from the case of Japan where Hallyu was ignited by drama 'Winter Sonata'. Hallyu has been established in daily lives of Taiwan, which should be taken noted when considering entrance into foreign countries, "said Jang Hyung-suk, vice president of HS Media, who planned concert in Taiwan of Jun Jin, popular Korean singer.
