[Orion's Drama News] Genres and Odd Romances

Stop your pumpkin carving (I know you are out there) and fill your time with more drama news as I take a look at more new things this week. First up is the brand new "Black" by OCN followed by a quick look at the changing landscape of the Korean drama industry. Lastly, I share the usual goodies, but not before I share news of a drama with an interesting premise.

Definitely Not Guardian: The Lonely and Great God

I am not understanding the newfound love for romance by OCN, but it is happening and "Black" may be its first big try. The series reeks of "We want another "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God", but Kim Eun-sook is costly". At the same time I know OCN may surprise us with a solid mixed genre show. "Black" is not on my radar, but I and my jokingly gifted Song Seung-heon socks wish it good luck. Enjoy its first teaser and some man-beauty in still form.

Dramaland In Progress

The THAAD business with China has caused changes in the Korean drama industry. From the heavy reliance on product placement to the change in format for accommodating commercial breaks, this crisis is obvious. I am not sure which desperate measures will work, but I hope some will. TvN's one-episode dramas search for fresh talent and the surprisingly missing genre system may push diversity forward. I am personally not holding my breath for major change, but progress is a slow and steady evolution.

You Are Such a Doll

I know Dramaland is desperate, but romancing robots is new. Is anyone else getting a flashback to that "Pushing Daisies" episode? Which is an actual thing, by the way and you are welcome for the nightmares. The series is probably not what it sounds like, although it says a lot about Korean drama's occasional relationship with romance that this is not the unhealthiest thing they have done. I will take kinks over underage girls being romantically paired with adult men any day.

Upcoming Drama Goodies

"The Temperature of Love" has released its first, cooking-heavy teaser while "Girls' Generation 1979" goes for the nostalgia appeal in its own. The first teaser full of unrequited childhood love is also out for "Boy and Girl From the 20th Century". "Argon" is coming out soon and it has released a highlight video. Popular creators are planning comebacks and this includes the team of "My Mister" as well as director Ahn Pan-seok. Jung Suk-won comes back with "Bad Guys Season 2" and Kyung Soo-jin has joined "Four Men".

Followed Dramas

Time stands still for "Man-Hole" and for my viewing of it as well. I plan a marathon soon, but with "Falsify" and "Argon" airing at the same time, September will be very hectic for me. You can read my preview of "Argon" today. I look forward to "Save Me" once again and my backlog is still pointing its finger at me and judging me. I know, backlog.
