"Narnia" debuts atop Korea's weekend box office

American fantasy film "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" opened on top of Korea's box office over the weekend, according to data by Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) released on Monday.

The third installment in the "Chronicles of Narnia" series starring Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes and Georgie Henley, attracted 469,842 viewers during the three-day period after opening in theaters on December 9.

The film, based on the novels of C.S. Lewis, is the follow up to "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)" and "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)".

Sony's action-packed thriller film "The Tourist" starring Hollywood heartthrobs Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, which also premiered in Korea's theaters last Thursday, landed on second place on the box office chart with 372,421 viewers.

"The Tourist", a remake of the 2004 French film "Anthony Zimmer", is about an innocent tourist getting entangled in a gangster chase after coming across an attractive woman who uses him as her means.

No. 3 was local romantic comedy "Petty Romance" starring Choi Kang-hee and Lee Sun-kyun, dropping by two steps from the previous weekend after selling 340,617 tickets.

The movie tells of an unsuccessful cartoonist and a virgin sex columnist coming together to create a successful adult comic.

Other newcomers on the latest chart included local film "Finding Mr. Destiny", about a Korean girl seeking her first love she meets in India, Spanish film "Buried", about a truck driver attacked by a terrorist and buried alive in wooden coffin and "Sammy's Adventures: The Secret Passage", a children's animation from Belgium
