Namkoong Min plays Na Yi-je, an ace doctor who is kicked out of a university hospital and becomes a chief doctor at a prison.

This is Namkoong Min's first drama since "Chief Kim" in 2017. At the time, Namkoong Min played an optimistic character named Kim Seong-ryong.

Namkoong Min is completely different in "Doctor Prisoner". Na Yi-je's ill-fate with the Taekang Group chairman's son Lee Jae-hwan (Park Eun-suk) deprives him of his license and he spends 3 years in prison. He doesn't hesitate to use his power within the prison to get what he wants. The way Lee Jae-hwan watches his patients die reflects his character clearly.

There's another character that doesn't like Na Yi-je: Seon Min-sik (Kim Byung-chul), an elite medical director who is near retirement. Na Yi-je handles Lee Jae-hwan with a single finger, but not Seon Min-sik. They're intense hatred for each other brings about tension to the drama.

Namkoong Min has been acting for 20 years now. Other than when he was gone on National Service, he has been busy building his skills and repertoire which made him the actor he is today. His character in "Doctor Prisoner" might bring him another peak in his career and it's all thanks to his hard work.
