[Movie] Korea's CG Technology Attempts to Make Inroads into Hollywood

7 Korean CG Companies Engage in 1:1 Business Meetings during American Film Market 42 Meetings Held on First Day including Meeting with VFX Director of X-Men

Korean CG companies, recognized of their technology through hugely popular movies such as 'Gukga Daepyo' ("Take Off") and "Haeundae", are participating in meetings with Hollywood film producers, improving their possibilities of making inroads into the global market.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Yu In-chon) and the Korea Creative Content Agency (President & CEO Lee Jae-woong) are promoting business meetings for Hollywood film makers and Korean CG companies from the 4th during the American Film Market (AFM) held in Los Angeles, USA.

These business meetings are held to expand the opportunities for Korean CG companies to work on international projects. Meetings will be held at the Santa Monica Loews Hotel, California, where the AFM is being held. It runs until the 8th.

The Korea Creative Content Agency supported 7 production companies, including EON Digital Films, who took charge of the CG for the film 'Gukga Daepyo' ("Take Off"), MoFac Studio of the film "Haeundae" and DTI Pictures of the drama 'Seondeok Yeowang' ("Queen Seon-deok"), to take part in the AFM. The agency has also invited VFX directors including David Alpert who produced the films 'The Matrix' and 'Speed Racer'.

The 7 Korean CG companies met individually with film professionals including producers, directors, and investors who lead the Hollywood film industry and showed them their brochures and films. The companies received great interest from those they met with.

On the 4th, the first day for business meetings, 42 business meetings were held with those engaged in the film industry including Stuart Calcote, producer of 'Rashomon', producer Gabrilee Llewellyn and producer Brian Manis.

Dan Chuba, known as the VFX director of 'X-Men' said, "The technologies of the Korean CG companies that I was introduced to during the business meetings are better than expected". Jeong Seong-jin, CEO of EON Digital Films said, "The meetings with local production personnel allowed me to gain inside information on entering the Hollywood market and to establish a network here".

The AFM was first established in 1981 and is regarded as one of the 3 major film markets of the world. The other two markets are the Cannes International Film Festival and the Milano Film Festival. In 2008, 7,000 producers, directors and distributers from more than 70 countries took part in the AFM. And a trade volume of KRW 5 trillion was made for more than 1,000 projects, including the making and negotiations of films.

Gang Seok-won, Manager of the Digital Content Industry Division of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said, "The AFM is a great opportunity to promote the abilities of outstanding Korean CG companies to relevant persons working in Hollywood. Therefore, we will use our local buyer network to promote them actively".
