About the Actor
Lee's first foray into Hollywood films came in 2009 with a starring role in "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra." Following the global success of that film, he signed on for "G.I. Joe 2: Retalitation," which was released in March 2013. His first period piece feature, "Masquerade" was released in late 2012, and was met with stellar reviews from both audiences and critics, and became the highest grossing period piece in Korean history. He next starred in "Red 2" starring opposite Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, and Anthony Hopkins. The film premiered in Korea on July 18, 2013. Korea became the second highest grossing market for the film behind the US. In 2015, Lee has two Korean films, "Insiders" and "Memories of the Sword", along with Hollywood blockbuster Terminator Genisys, where he plays a T-1000 robot. Lee is recently filmed an Independent US film, "Beyond Deceit", opposite legendary actors Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino, which is due for a 2016 release.
About the Director
Park Heung-shik studied Astronomy and Atmospheric Sciences at Yonsei University. After graduating in the 8th class of the prestigious Korean Academy of Film Arts, Park first trained as an assistant director under Park Kwang-su and Hur Jin-ho. As seen in his feature directorial debut I Wish I Had a Wife (2001), Park focuses on capturing the delicate flow of emotions that reveal themselves in the ordinary routines of the day. His second film, My Mother, the Mermaid (2004) was an acting showcase for Jeon Do-yeon in dual roles, making more apparent Park's talent in drawing natural acting from his actors and capturing it within the lyrical frame of his film. His third film Bravo, My Life! (2005) was a family drama set against the political upheaval of the late 1970s/early 1980s. In 2008 Park took on the challenge of directing a 16-episode TV drama adapted from a chick lit novel. My Sweet Seoul depicted the lives of thirty-something modern-day career women. Park was among the four directors who worked on Sorry, Thanks, a 2011 omnibus film dealing with the profound relationships people establish with their pets. His short My Little Sister is about a six-year-old girl's separation from her dog, which she treats as an imaginary sibling. When the girl's mother gets pregnant with her second child, the family decides to put the dog up for adoption, a frequent occurrence in Korea. His 2012 film Children of Heaven is set at a middle school where a temporary teacher is called on to take care of troubled students. Funded by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education for raising awareness on the issues teenagers often face, such as school violence, the film avoids being a typical message movie by the sympathetic treatment of its characters.

The fight scenes are AWFUL. This is largely a problem because of the way they were filmed and the way they were edited. They also relied too heavily on gimmicks and inappropriate wire-fu for a historical film, albeit historical fiction. They're almost as bad as the fight scenes from 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'. They are not quite that bad because the underscoring doesn't turn them into ballet.
The other problem was huge narrative leaps. Eventually I picked up on what was going on, but it shouldn't have required quite so much effort.
My personal and perhaps inappropriate/ignorant opinion is that the director should have spent much more time in Beijing than Taipei (this has a very Taiwanese directorial feeling to it).
Now for the good stuff:
When fight scenes aren't taking place (and they fortunately do not make up the bulk of the movie), the cinematography and art direction are exceptional; this is a truly beautiful movie. The acting is at least adequate all around and Kim Go-eun is wonderful as the main protagonist.
The narrative is compelling, if occasionally hard to follow and the ending is very moving.
I'll definitely look at this one again, and soon. Now that I know the fight scenes are going to piss me off, I'll just ignore them and enjoy the rest of this beautiful film.
