Local Films Go to Big Apple

New Yorkers will get a dose of Korean film this month with movies from both young and established directors to be screened.
Im Kwon-taek, one of the country's most celebrated filmmakers, is the subject of a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art's Gramercy Theatre, Feb. 5-27.
Supported by the Korean Cultural Service in New York, "Im Kwon-taek: Master Korean Filmmaker" consists of 15 films tracing the director's career since the late 1970s.
Im has made close to 100 films over the past four decades. He won the Best Director award at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival for his most recent movie, "Chihwaseon", which tells the story of a restless painter in the 19th century.
At the other end of his career path is Greg Pak, a Korean American writer and director whose first feature film, "Robot Stories", opens Friday at Cinema Village, a repertory theater in Manhattan specializing in cult movies.
Winner of over 23 awards including Best Director at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, "Robot Stories" consists of four tales in which humans struggle to connect with each other in a world of robot babies, android office workers and digital immortality.
The Korean Cultural Service in New York also holds a "Night at the Movies" screenings. Go to http://www.koreanculture.org for details.
