Korean Cinema Takes Up 60% of Local Movie Market in Feb

The market share of homegrown cinema commanded more than 60 percent for two months in a row in February as a series of local blockbusters lead the renaissance of Korean movies according to a new tally gathered by IM Pictures, a local film investor. IM Pictures said Korean films clocked nearly 2.8 million admissions in Seoul, accounting for 60.4 percent of the movie market. The Korean cinema's unprecedented run is attributed to the back-to-back commercial successes by domestic blockbusters such as Silmido and Taegukgi. Both of those films share the common theme of division of the Korean peninsula. On the heels of Silmido which ushered in a new era of 10 million viewers last month, Taegukgi is on its way to reaching that milestone yet at a faster pace.
