KBS Exports Remake Rights for "Sassy Girl, Chun-hyang"

KBS has exported the remake rights for a Korean television drama for the first time ever. "KBS has signed a contract with the Chinese distribution and production company Panorama Media to export the remake rights for the KBS TV2 drama 'Sassy Girl, Chun-hyang.' There have been previous instances of remake rights being exported for Korean movies such as 'Joint Security Area,' but this is the first time the remake rights for a television drama will be exported overseas", said a spokesperson for KBS on May 18.

KBS also added that this contract will give foreign broadcasters the opportunity to learn from Korea's expertise in producing quality TV dramas. Some Chinese and Japanese broadcasters had unsuccessfully tried to imitate scenes from the Korean drama "Winter Sonata" before.

Aside from signing the contract for the remake rights, KBS and Panorama Media have also agreed to dispatch the original production crew of "Sassy Girl, Chun-hyang" to China to help produce the drama's remake. "Sassy Girl, Chun-hyang", which went off the air in March, has been exported to five East Asian countries including China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, taking in about US$570,000 in revenues.
