Kangta honored by Ban

Pop singer Kangta was awarded a plaque of appreciation by Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon yesterday for his participation in the ASEAN tour by Korean Wave stars to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Korea-ASEAN Dialogue.

In a program to mark the 1989 establishment of the dialogue relationship, the Foreign Ministry has been arranging for Korean Wave stars to visit the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. ASEAN is comprised of 10 member nations - Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Kangta, a former member of the idol group H.O.T, will make a five-day trip to Thailand and Laos from next Tuesday. During the trip, he will pay courtesy calls to senior government officials and participate in various events including semi-concerts to meet his fans and promote Korean culture.

Kangta, who is also well-known as a talented song writer, has been expanding his career to acting since H.O.T broke up in 2001.

Korean Wave stars making the ASEAN tour previously were actress Jang Nara, who visited Vietnam and Indonesia in December 2004, and actor Kim Jae-won and female pop group Baby Vox, who traveled to Malaysia and Myanmar last September.
