Jeonju Digital Project 2008 Goes to Africa

One of Korea's top three film festivals, the 9th Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) will take place May 1 – 9, 2008, and will this year present three African filmmakers in its acclaimed Jeonju Digital Project. Since launching in 2000 the JIFF initiative has sponsored short film projects to promote digital film worldwide, providing US$55 000 to each of three selected filmmakers to produce a roughly 30-minute short film.

Last year's Jeonju Digital Project received special recognition, winning the 'Special Jury Prize' in the 60th Locarno International Film Festival. This year's selected filmmakers come from various parts of Africa, a continent whose films still remain unknown to Korean audiences.

The recipients of the fund this year are Idrisa Ouédraogo (Burkina Faso), Mahamat-Saleh Haroun (Chad), and Nacer Khemir (Tunisia). Their films will premiere jointly at JIFF and then travel to various international film festivals. Originally focusing only on Asian directors, the Project expanded last year to include European directors and this year African, on its way to becoming a worldwide digital film project.
