[Ishani's Picks] "Behind Every Star" Brings A Fresh Twist To An Old Trope

The idea of going behind the scenes of an entertainment company isn't a novel concept, but "Behind Every Star" is bringing us something new indeed. Here's why you should be tuning in to this drama.

Spoiler Alert!

"Behind Every Star" tells the story of Method Entertainment employees who handle some of the biggest celebrities in the business. The show is adapted from the French drama "Call My Agent!", also known as "Dix pour cent" and stars a stellar cast of actors: Lee Seo-jin , Kwak Sun-young, Seo Hyun-woo, Joo Hyun-young, Shim So-young, Steve Sanghyun Noh, Shin Hyun-seung and more. While it is a mini-series, it feels more like a sitcom, with each episode introducing new characters in the form of actors played by themselves. For the most part, this is what adds an unexpected layer of fun to the narrative, but to some extent, it also takes away from the characters we are supposed to care about.

The central figure in the drama is presented to be Ma Tae-oh, played by Lee Seo-jin, who is the Director of Method Entertainment. He is related to So Hyeon-joo, a new recruit, and it is implied that he is her father. However, Ma Tae-oh has a family of his own, and in a complicated turn of events, his son Go Eun-gyeol, a rookie actor, and So Hyeon-joo have feelings for each other.

This subplot was developed rather quickly in the first two episodes, which leaves us wondering what the rest could have in store for us. Needless to say, if it does so happen that Ma Tae-oh is revealed to be Hyeon-joo's father, her budding romance with Eun-gyeol might just fall into the genre of melodrama.

Next, we have Cheon Je-in and Kim Joong-don, played by Kwak Sun-young and Seo Hyun-woo respectively. These are two individuals with entirely opposite personalities, who never seem to get along but strangely, have undeniable chemistry and, despite the constant bickering, understand each other all too well. Je-in is a workaholic and cannot seem to dedicate her time to anything other than casual relationships, and Joong-don is a pure sweetheart. It will be interesting to see where this dynamic goes in the future.

Unlike other K-Dramas in this genre, "Behind Every Star" curates the perfect balance between realism and fiction, which gives it that extra edge. The anticipation of your favorite celebrities showing up in cameos is quite exciting too. Overall, "Behind Every Star" has kicked off with an interesting start, and I cannot wait for future episodes to bring us more entertaining stories.
