Hyundai will manufacture a pickup truck exclusively for the North American market.
The automaker Wednesday said its Santa Cruz pickup truck will be produced at its plant in Alabama starting from 2021. It plans to spend US$410 million to expand the plant and hire about 1,200 additional assembly workers and other staff.
The automaker expects to bank on the Santa Cruz to boost its profitability, as pickup trucks are the most popular vehicles in the U.S.
Sport utility vehicles accounted for 72.1 percent of total car sales there for this year, and an estimated 20 percent of them were pickup trucks.
