[HanCinema's News] "The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos" Triumphs at Box Office

"The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos" had a huge weekend, as strong word-of-mouth pushed the movie into first place, with a final total of 2.67 million overall admissions. "Tazza: One Eyed Jack" had 1.68 million admissions by comparison. However, going into the weekend, both movies had about the same admissions - 700,000. The million admission difference came over Saturday and Sunday.

"The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos" and "Tazza: One Eyed Jack" had similar levels of hype and anticipation going in for early viewers. However, "The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos" proved to have stronger recommendations from the viewing public, allowing it to prevail when viewers were left to pick one or the other based on available information.

"The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos" had the advantage of an obvious action movie concept coupled with Ma Dong-seok in the lead role. Based on the TV drama "Bad Guys", the movie also had the advantage of in-built branding. "Tazza: One Eyed Jack" had Park Jung-min in the lead role and was the latest in the "Tazza" gambling franchise. However, viewer expectations clashed with the surprisingly violent final product.

"Cheer Up, Mr. Lee" ended up catering toward more of a niche market, as the father themed comedy had fewer screens to start out with, only racking up 200,000 viewers in its first few days. It did somewhat better come the weekend, which quadrupled its admissions compared to Wednesday and Thursday alone. "Tazza: One Eyed Jack" by contrast only doubled its numbers, while "The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos also quadrupled its numbers.
