[HanCinema's News] Ratings for "Missing: The Other Side 2" Idle on a Low Note

As is commonly the case for cable network dramas, "Missing: The Other Side - Season 2" was not preempted over the Lunar New Year holiday. This resulted in lower ratings for the drama than normal, 3.8% in the eleventh episode on January 23rd and 4.0% in the twelfth episode on January 24th. But this underwhelming performance belies the overall strong trend of the drama, which until this weekend, had consistently outperformed its predecessor.

Back in 2020, "Missing: The Other Side" opened with ratings of 1.7% on August 29th. By the third week, it had ratings of 3.8% in the sixth episode on September 13th, the high mark until the twelfth episode finale on October 11th with 4.8% ratings. Even the eleventh episode dip for "Missing: The Other Side - Season 2" was still higher than "Missing: The Other Side" had in its own eleventh episode- 3.8% versus only 3.4%.

The producers of "Missing: The Other Side - Season 2" seemed to realize that the Lunar New Year Holiday was not a good place to end the drama for this scheduling reason. This is why the original twelve episode order of the drama was expanded to fourteen. Of course, such an expansion would never have happened if "Missing: The Other Side - Season 2" had not outperformed expectations.

"Missing: The Other Side" had clearly amassed fans since its original airdates, prompting a fuller conclusion to the story. It has no confirmed successor on OCN, but will be followed by "Our Blooming Youth" in its timeslot on tvN this coming February 6th. The success of the drama is a good sign for future fantasy mystery thriller projects on the cable network- even if its ratings are only good by OCN standards, and only just barely function as a placeholder by tvN standards.
