The decision was announced at the festival's closing ceremony on June 16th. In his awards speech, Bong Joon-ho praised the festival and particularly the audience. The president of the Sydney Film Festival's jury described "Parasite" as having an outrageous disregard for genre conventions, calling it tender and brutal, beautiful and harsh, funny and tragic, and a masterwork in its exploration of class.
