[HanCinema's News] "Parasite" Sets Record at Vietnamese Box Office

In addition to success on the film festival circuit and the domestic box office "Parasite" has also proven surprisingly popular in other markets as well. The Palme d'Or winning film from director Bong Joon-ho has just passed the two million dollar mark in the Vietnamese market, beating the previous record of 1.86 million dollars made by "Train to Busan" in 2016.

For a sense of perspective, "Parasite" was also the best overall performing film in its opening weekend starting on June 20th. Its main competition was the latest Toy Story movie, which initially outsold "Parasite", but quickly fell behind as "Parasite" became more popularly recommended in various social networks.

"Parasite"'s numbers were narrowly overcome by those of the latest Annabelle movie. The latest Spider-Man movie has done roughly two and a half times as well as all three of those movies put together. "Parasite" was able to achieve parity with more minor American releases in part because the Korean corporations CGV and Lotte run most of the theaters in Vietnam, which make them easier to distribute in that region.
