[HanCinema's News] "My Roommate Is a Gumiho" Confirmed to Not Have Product Placement

At an online May 26th press conference for "My Roommate Is a Gumiho" a representative for the drama confirmed that the fantasy romance drama would not have any Chinese product placement. The claim was made in response to a direct question about the subject. The Chinese streaming platform iQIYI is sponsoring the drama and releasing it in the Chinese region, prompting concerns that the production may attempt to deliberately cater to Chinese audiences.

This contradicts previous claims by "My Roommate Is a Gumiho" back in April that the drama would contain such product placement. The entire notion of Chinese product placement in South Korean dramas has been a hot issue as of late. It was a major factor behind the cancelation of "Joseon Exorcist" back in March. Even "Vincenzo" was recently embroiled in controversy over the subject, with Song Joong-ki issuing a personal apology for not noticing the Chinese origin of food he ate on screen.

"My Roommate Is a Gumiho" stars Jang Ki-yong as a nine hundred and ninety nine year old gumiho and "Lee Hyeri" as a woman who he is forced to cohabitate with out of circumstance. It's based on on the 2017 webtoon of the same title. "My Roommate Is a Gumiho" had its premiere the same day as the press conference, and had ratings of 5.888% in the first episode.
