[HanCinema's News] Lee Ki-woo Talks About "My Liberation Notes"

Recently actor Lee Ki-woo was interviewed about his role in the television drama "My Liberation Notes" which recently finished airing on JTBC. The actor had attracted much attention for his convincing portrayal of a single father who maintains positive sentiments about his marriage despite its apparent failure. Lee Ki-woo mentioned hearing from old friends he hadn't spoken to in years who identified strongly with the difficulties his character has with juggling family life with company life.

Lee Ki-woo said he was intrigued by the role in part because his character has relatively little dialog, despite his general importance in the story. Lee Ki-woo was warned by director Kim Seok-yoon that the role would be a difficult one for that reason. So Lee Ki-woo prepared for his role by thinking carefully about the exact expressions that would be needed for each of his scenes, many of which encompassed a wide variety of tastes- often literally, in the case of the eating scenes.

Lee Ki-woo is not a single father himself, and studied for his role in part by using a dating app designed for divorced people. Lee Ki-woo also met often with a personal friend who is a single father, and observed how compared to the old days this friend doesn't smile or show as many expressions as he used to. Lee Ki-woo took this nuance to heart for his performance in "My Liberation Notes" with a character that was often difficult to read.

Personality-wise, Lee Ki-woo mentioned being an ENFJ (Extraverted, Intuitive, Feeling, Judging). However, his character is introverted. Doing the role helped Lee Ki-woo to appreciate how to a person who doesn't like going out and meeting people,, constant work outside the home and coming back to his daughter and older sister, is not conducive to new relationships. Though hard at first, Lee Ki-woo came to appreciate this outlook, describing himself as similar to his character now.

"My Liberation Notes" ended with ratings of 6.7%. Lee Ki-woo mentioned how the interest in the drama seems to exceed its modest ratings. Lee Ki-woo believes that this was due to the power of the story. It was, as he put it, relatable. Lee Ki-woo used the death of his own father to inform his performance in regards to death of his character's mother, and received many supportive messages on social media from viewers who went through the same experience.
