[HanCinema's News] Kim Sung-kyu Talks About Blockbusters Like "Hansan: Rising Dragon" Ha

The historical war film "Hansan: Rising Dragon" about general Yi Sun-shin has already been breaking records ahead of its release for early online reservations. Actor Kim Sung-kyu, who is appearing in the movie, is no stranger to box office hits. The actor had appeared in "The Outlaws" which was the predecessor to "The Roundup" which this year broke the COVID-19 induced slump at the South Korean box office.

In a recent interview, Kim Sung-kyu mentioned meeting with the production team behind "The Roundup" shortly after the action film broke the ten million viewer mark. Kim Sung-kyu said that it was difficult to know where the series would go after this, but that he did hear hopes that the next film in the series wouldn't be quite so exciting. "The Roundup" was such a big story, after all, because high-performing South Korean films have been a rarity in recent years.

Kim Sung-kyu said that he was as surprised as anyone else about just how well "The Roundup" did, noting that other spectators, much like himself, must have wanted to go out to watch a movie having not done so for quite some time. When asked about whether he, too, would like to return to "The Roundup: No Way Out" or beyond, Kim Sung-kyu answered in the affirmative. He welcomed even the chance for a cameo, and not just s smaller role.

"Hansan: Rising Dragon" thus have no clouds to dispel as it seeks to accomplish the same feat and beyond. Kim Sung-kyu will take on the role of Junsa, a soldier active during the Japanese invasion of Korea back in the sixteenth century. Kim Sung-kyu hasn't said much about the specific of his role, more going into the greater box office context of "The Admiral: Roaring Currents" which preceded it. Kim Sung-kyu was nervous whether he could meet the standards of the original film.

Kim Sung-kyu first saw the "The Admiral: Roaring Currents" on an airplane, and was expecting mere spectacle. He was surprised by the power of the acting, especially the lead played by Choi Min-sik. Kim Sung-kyu had been having doubts about his acting career at the time, but claims to have been moved by "The Admiral: Roaring Currents" to try again. A friend described this story as romantic. "Hansan: Rising Dragon" will be released in South Korean theaters on July 27th.
