[HanCinema's News] CJ Chairman Emphasizes Importance of Movies as Culture

On July 25th CJ released the contents of a meeting that took place between CJ Chairman Lee Jae-hyun and relevant employees in CJ's film department. The purpose of the meeting was to congratulate them on their work in bringing attention to "Parasite".

Lee Jae-hyun's comments during this meeting were noteworthy, because they placed little emphasis on profit, in spite of "Parasite"'s clear financial success. Lee Jae-hyun talked about how without culture there would be no country and emphasized the importance of investing in culture even during difficult times. Lee Jae-hyun also stated that he had not erred in trusting to the enthusiasm of young people in South Korea.

Lee Jae-hyun went on to describe his dream as being for Korean culture recognition around the world not just for movies, but also music and dramas. "Parasite" was highlighted as an example of a project that worked toward fulfilling that dream. CJ Entertainment was responsible for producing and distributing the film, as well as making the necessary inroads to get the movie screened at the Cannes Film Festival, where it earned the Palme d'Or earlier this year.
