HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2012.05.04 ~ 2012.05.06)

Marvel's "The Avengers" was just released in the U.S and broke the U.S opening weekend admissions record in the process. Here in Korea the film continued to dominate proceedings with 1,430,613 admissions, placing it now as the third highest grossing film on the 2012 Korean box office with 4,001,878 total admissions. Marvel's superhero flick snatched 53.50% of the ticket sales and left the fighting for the scraps.

Moon Hyeon-seong's "As One" came out this week and it tells the true life story of a unified Korean table tennis team that competed in the 1991 Chiba International Table Tennis Championships. The drama stars Ha Ji-won, Bae Doona, Choi Yoon-young and managed to secure a healthy 509,447 admissions despite the omnipotence of the above Hollywood blockbuster. "Mirror Mirror" is next with 248,377 admissions, the film came out in Korea on the third and, despite receiving generally poor reviews, saw some 285,620 admissions come its way. "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" also made its entry this past week. The zany and magical world of Dr. Seuss attracted 6.50% of filmgoers this past weekend and that was good enough for forth in this week's chart. Many of Korea's students are finishing with their exams now, that, paired with children's day on Saturday, resulted in a boost for film's such as this one.

Jeong Ji-woo's "A Muse" is at fifth with 182,263, down from last week's second were is claimed 389,656 admissions. Despite its poor entry into the charts, "A Muse" now finds itself at number ten in the list of highest grossing Korean films of the year. It's followed by the Japanese animation "Crayon Shin-chan: The Storm Called Operation Golden Spy" which remains unmoved from the previous weekend despite improving its admission count by about 40,000. The popular tale of first love "Architecture 101" is still going strong at number seven. Lee Yong-ju's romantic drama added 102,769 to its total of 3,879,033 over the weekend.

"The Scent" is down four spots at eight. Kim Hyeong-jun provocative new piece currently has over a million admissions but its performance in the charts has been wavering under the pressure of some of the new local and international releases. "Battleship" has almost stalled by is fighting it out at number nine. This futuristic war epic had just 10,779 admissions to add to its total of 2,230,317. Lastly, the French film "The Intouchables (Intouchables)" remains in the charts after seven weeks but looks likely to miss out on eight straight, as it was able to add just 5,102 to its efforts.
