[HanCinema's Film Review] Korean Weekend Box Office 2012.01.27 ~ 2012.01.29

HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2011.01.27 ~ 2012.01.29)

After just week at the top Lee Seok-hoon's "Dancing Queen" has given way to Chung Ji-young's interesting new film "Unbowed". This week's number one has created some controversy in the news as it is based on a true story of math professor who was accused of shooting a judge with a crossbow in 2007. It's a fifty-fifty split this week with both local Korean films and international releases find a place in the top ten. However the top three are local hits that have grabbed the lion's share of public interest.

"Dancing Queen" has been well received thus far and having watched the film this past weekend I can honestly say that it's worth a watch. Lee Seok-hoon's comedy drama has a little bit of everything going for it and its entertainment value makes it a must-see. "Speckles: The Tarbosaurus" is at three with a tale of dinosaur life on the Korean peninsular. The Korean animation floodgates have now apparently opened and "Speckles: The Tarbosaurus" is the latest hoping to cash on their recent popularity. The American comedy "Puss in Boots" is another 3D animation, which is currently at four. This spin off from the popular "Shrek" series has managed to accumulate 1,852,530 total admissions since its release in Korea on the 11th.

Dwayne Johnson (Also known as "The Rock") leads the charge in his new film "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island". Dwayne's latest is definitely for the young ones and this past week saw it add 216,196 to its cause. "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" is still swinging away in Korean threatres. "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" was released at the end of the second week in December and since then it has amassed 7,490,425 admissions in Korea and it still has 259 screenings. Kim Dal-joong's "Pacemaker" might have been outshined by some of the other local releases but those who have seen seemed to have enjoyed his offerings. "Pacemaker" has only been able to collect 429,415 admissions since being release on the 18th.

Cameron Crowe's comedy "We Bought a Zoo" is number eight with 47,485 and stars Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, and Thomas Haden Church. The number nine spot is held by Joung Yong-ju's romantic comedy "Never Ending Story". It stars Uhm Tae-woong and Jung Ryeo-won and had 30,886 admissions this past weekend. Lastly, the America adaptation of the "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is at ten, rapidly falling off the charts since its release on the 12th.
