Korean Weekend Box Office (2011.06-17~2011.06.19)

"Sunny - 2010" is now the most successful Korean film of the year as it clears the 5 million admissions mark. Kang Hyeong Cheol's "Sunny - 2010" added 269,866 to its grand total this past weekend, falling just short of reclaiming the number one spot from "Kung Fu Panda 2" which saw 278,214 tickets sold bringing its total admissions to 4,495,106.

"Sunny - 2010" has indeed captured the Korean publics heart. The film was released more than a month ago now and its high position in the charts is a great sign for Korea's biggest feature of 2011, a title previously belonging to "Detective K". "X-men: First Class" closely follows at number three with 260,668 admissions. This is by far the best in the series so make a date to catch all the mutant action with this one! J.J Abrams' "Super 8" had an estimated budget of $45,000,000 and with Steven Spielberg producing you know that you will be in for a fantastic ride. This mystery sci-fi thriller stars Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka and Kyle Chandler and has accumulated 234,495 admissions in Korean cinemas.

At number five is "White: The Melody of the Curse" cashing in on Korea's fanaticism surrounding pop idol groups. The film has only 449,034 admissions thus far and its position at five this week marks the falloff between the top films and those just making up the numbers. Another comic book film straight out of Hollywood occupies number six. "Green Lantern" has not managed to impress viewers overseas by is still getting the numbers it needs to sit comfortably with 119,008 admissions. Brad Fruman's crime drama "The Lincoln Lawyer", staring Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei and Ryan Phillippe, is at seven with just 92,552 admissions behind its name.

Released in the second week of June, "Moby Dick" is having a hard time keeping up the pace with the likes of "Sunny - 2010" and the America blockbusters. The film dropped from fourth last week to eighth. "Something Borrowed" is directed by Luke Greenfield slots in at nine with a modest 40,871 admissions and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" maxes out its earnings in Korea with a total of 3,106,217 admissions.
