[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Whisper" Episode 15

The fight on all sides continues in episode fithteen of "Whisper" as alliances keep changing and new tools for manipulation keep appearing. Soo-yeon gets a taste of her own medicine as everything she has helped inflict upon others now appears at her doorstep. Things cannot end quite yet, so secrets start to surface which give different players leverage against their enemies. What will happen when all of it explodes is the question.

Selfish villains are always reliable, because they can always be trusted to consistently look after their own interests. Il-hwan (Kim Kap-soo) choosing his company over his wife's life and even Soo-yeon's (Park Se-young) freedom is therefore not surprising. After all, we are talking about the very person who implicated his wife and asked his daughter to marry for his goals before. What does surprise me is that Soo-yeon did not see this coming.

I enjoy her downfall, but it is bittersweet. The series has not really developed its characters and their relationships adequately. If Il-hwan had shown reliable fatherly love and Soo-yeon had shown more deep bonding and trust for him, this betrayal would have carried more impact. I have not mentioned the creators in a while, because I do not like to compare works. Yet I cannot help but wonder where their mastery with morally grey, interesting, engaging characters has gone.

There is little left to do in the series now but engage in constant one-upping. From Yoo-taek's (Kim Hong-pa) convenient secret slush to the arrest of Soo-yeon's mother, the writer is just injecting new element after new element in an effort to keep things going. This is why the ending of this episode comes as a surprise to me. If our main and currently thirsty with power villain is arrested, where do we go from here? Will the final episodes feature his trial?

I can see this working if every single speck of dirt on Yeong-joo (Lee Bo-young) and Dong-joon's (Lee Sang-yoon) past is brought to light, but would those count when there is a taped confession? Moreover, who would even help Jeong-il (Kwon Yul) make a case for himself and why? I assume the cliffhanger has something to do with it. Perhaps Jeong-il has escaped and the final episodes will be a criminal chase.

I just wish that these power games will end and make room for more exciting situations. At this point the barrage of deals, blackmail and near-solutions has overstayed its welcome. I cannot blame Tae-gon (Kim Hyung-mook) for eating his boredom away. Whether the leads will have a proper showdown or just throw Subway sandwiches at one another, I expect "Whisper" will end with a bang.
