[HanCinema's Drama Review] "That Man Oh Soo" Episode 5

The "This Is Not Real" wall from "Another Miss Oh" makes a special appearance here. I love that wall. That whole area is a great shooting location. Like most small neighborhoods in Seoul, it's filled with hills- yet the scenery is quite a bit mroe picturesque than the average neighborhood. The architecture is very nice. And the layout makes it plausible that Oh Soo and Yoo-ri are always running into each other by accident, because shortcuts will do that.

Anyway, as far as the actual plot, it's still just standard romantic comedy fluff. I did like how they did the whole he pretends to kiss her thing and she is obviously acting like he's going to do it. That's a pretty standard gag but I haven't seen it in awhile. Also Lee Jong-hyun has a really good mean teasing face. In general Lee Jong-hyun and Kim So-eun have good mutual dislike chemistry, although obviously a good romance needs more than that.

So far their main hope of bonding is still just...feral cats. Incidentally the cats Oh Soo and Yoo-ri run into are awfully tame. They are still adorable cats though, and that adorableness also rubs off on Oh Soo, who behaves a bit like an idiot in anticipation of finding cute kitties. The question is accidentally raised though, about whether Yoo-ri should be feeding the cats, what with her being a police officer. Although come to think of it, I'm not sure Yoo-ri works in the same neighborhood she lives in.

As for Oh Soo's job of having to safeguard the magic tree, as usual, "That Man Oh Soo" is not terribly interested in its own premise. The only time it's even addressed is when Oh Soo's magical powers cause him to briefly become jealous of Jin-woo. Of course Oh Soo didn't need magical powers to be able to tell that Jin-woo and Yoo-ri are getting cosy. We just need these regular reminders of the magical powers lest we forget about all this stuff come the climax.

Jin-woo is interesting as a character mostly because he's an obviously much better match for Yoo-ri than Oh Soo, just because Jin-woo and Yoo-ri actually like each other. I remain not terribly engaged in "That Man Oh Soo" or its characters, it's mostly just been a better than average experience on account of the occasional solid gag. Unambitious though "That Man Oh Soo" may be it does scratch all the right itches.
