[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Punch - Drama" Episode 6

"Punch - Drama" isn't losing speed. In fact, it's getting more exciting as each episode passes. The episode raced by, fraught with emotion, and ended with a scene that was like a punch in the gut. That is no small feat when the character who are the most effective are the villains.

Before he dies, Jung-hwan is just trying to take care of business. He wants to ensure his family's safety and comfort no matter the means. He knows he has to do it quickly because the cancer is eating away at him and he becomes ineffective when pain strikes. But standing in his way is Ha-kyung who walks the straight and narrow road. She knows nothing of his illness and wages war against Jung-hwan for justice using the proper means that will eventually land Jung-hwan in jail. It's very intense watching Jung-hwan suffer alone, knowing what Ha-kyung doesn't: he won't be there to serve his jail sentence. I wonder how long he'll last trying to suffer in secret with his doctor bribing him with pain medication for legal help.

What makes their rivalry, and hidden love, so potent are the small ways that they do battle. Yes, there is a major manhunt going on, but its the little things that show Ha-kyung's determination best. They speak in metaphors around their daughter to keep her unaware, flying paper airplanes fashioned out of important documents. They actually use their daughter as a source of intelligence, which is a sign of how serious they are because they both love her.

The other relationship that ruled the episode was that between Tae-joon and his older brother. They are twisted, immoral individuals, but together, they are the remnant of a poor, sad family with a tragic history. They rely on each other and protect each other. Despite their wrongdoings that include manipulation and murder, one empathizes with their brotherly love, their bond and the emotion that drives them to do whatever it takes to protect each other. This is the mark that "Punch - Drama" is a great show. We can understand the good guys. We can understand the bad guys. It turns our emotions into a muddied mess and then races forward to bring on the next episode with even more turns and twists.
