[HanCinema's Drama Review] "My Love from the Star" Episode 11

The byword for this episode is curiousity. There are lots of questions posed this time that for the most part aren't answered. But then, that's the entire point. It's easy to see how Jae-Kyoung has been able to operate for so long- even though the Lee family still goes to the trouble of having family dinners they seem to react to matters of curiousity and gossip with mild disdain. I guess they just prefer eating in stony silence.

Granted, there are reasons for people to not want to engage in such trivialities. Song-I's brother shows almost no interest in the fact that his sister's life was in danger, instead harping on what her relationship is with the mysterious guy next door that she just hangs out in his apartment alone. As annoying as the drama's murder storyline is, I have to at least give it credit for consistency. Outside of the police most of the characters in this drama pay no attention to the murderer behind the curtain unless they've literally got a gun shoved in their face.

Fortunately "My Love from the Star" doesn't dwell on these particulars outside of the opening and ending, leaving us with a very large interior to deal with the romance. For the first time, I can actually see genuine character development on Song-I's part. She really does care about Min-Joon. Given a situation where he's in danger, Song-I doesn't shirk off the responsibility and does everything she can to help him.

It's an interesting contrast to previous storyline events, where Min-Joon was clearly caring for Song-I against his will. Indeed, if the drama has had problems making Min-Joon's affection toward Song-I convincing, this episode does a lot to ameliorate that problem. She's not...growing up exactly, but it's clear that Song-I can be motivated by something other than her own immediate selfish desires and this does the storyline a lot of good.

As usual, though, once the drama gets in the comfortable groove of making the romance convincing, we have to be reminded again that there is a murder subplot going on that I really would like to just go away. I have no idea how we're supposed to interpret the final sequence of events here. Is Min-Joon just supposed to be really dumb or something? It's hard to imagine that he's been able to survive living on Earth incognito for the last several hundred years and be this incapable of dealing with danger, superpowers notwithstanding. Although at this point that's probably just territory we have to accept.
