[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Masked Prosecutor" Episode 7

A few big revelations took place this episode of "Masked Prosecutor", but more than that, we got to see genuine character development in Min-hee. The development walked hand in hand with the unfolding of her backstory. Kim Sun-a also opened up with her burgeoning character.

We learned more about Min-hee's past as she chases the cold trails that Sang-taek left behind. He has caused many hurts in his selfish climb to affluence, including the cover up of Min-hee's intellectually disabled mother's rape to further his career. Kim Sun-a gives a charged performance as a Min-hee who is delving into a painful past for both her mother and herself. It's a marked difference from the stiff Min-hee of the past six episodes.

Then we have the self-entitled, smirking, shadowed Sang-teak who feels he is invincible. This trait will most certainly be his downfall, but for now he is currently shielded by blackmail and wealth. He is clever, but his arrogance is so overwhelming that it's a bit too much. I wouldn't mind if the writer dialed that back. But that cleverness makes him a heavy contender. He convinces Hyun-woong that he is partly responsible for Dae-cheol's father's death, manipulating him through guilt. This is not hard to do because it's obvious that Hyun-woong has doubts about how his family's wealth and power was acquired.

Hyun-woong is more like Dae-cheol than I initially thought. He has a stout sense of righteousness that is quashed by his loyalty to his family. But in the scene where both he and Dae-cheol must listen to Sang-taek's corruption, the brothers look equally horrified. This could lead to a union between them, or, it could send Hyun-woong down a darker path if he denies his conscience.

Denying one's conscience could be the reason behind Hyun-woong's mother denial of him and his father, or she could really be a cruel woman. She's a vague character that I don't find particularly compelling. Most of the interest in her is generated by Joo Sang-wook's fantastic acting.

Dae-cheol is still juggling his masked persona and his prosecutor persona. He still feels powerless as a prosecutor. But as the masked man he almost feels invincible. Plus, this Batman gets his very own Robin named Jang Ho-sik (Lee Moon-sik), a burglar who discovers Dae-cheol's identity and who is now squatting in Dae-cheol's apartment. This pairing will make for some laughs as both Joo Sang-wook and Lee Moon-sik have a penchant for comedy. I also hope, though, that Lee's character will force Dae-cheol to reckon with himself and really get serious about his career and doing the right thing as a prosecutor.
