[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Masked Prosecutor" Episode 3

Past collides with present as Dae-cheol fervently dives into revenge for his father. So much of what fueled his father's sad turns in life remains and continues to fester in positions of power. It is in this third episode that we also see his half-brother, Hyeon-woong, start to question his place in life and his father's past corruptions. Min-hee is the most vaguely developed main character, but as she is caught up in the thick of Dae-cheol's investigation, she will hopefully get her own development.

As Dae-cheol explores his father's past and suffers the grief of losing him, we get to experience alongside him how difficult and unfair life was for his father. We get to experience each heart-breaking realization of how twisted and horrible Kang Joong-ho's (played by Lee Ki-young) betrayal was. It not only involved a friend betraying a friend, but the people around Joong-ho who manipulated him and facilitated the lies he agreed to tell. We feel how hard it's been for Dae-cheol to watch his mother live with her new family after abandoning him and his father. The emotional aspect of Dae-cheol's impetus to become an avenging hero is strong. It makes watching Hyeon-woong's own realizations that his father, Joong-ho, is not the man he thought he was, even more powerful. It also leads me to hope that the brother's will band together against the corruption that ruined lives and continues to do so.

This episode also introduces us to Seo Ri-na (Hwang Sun-hee) another young woman who is helping to rid her parents' generation of corruption. She fits in well with the three leads and also adds a bit of romantic tension into the mix. Unlike Dae-cheol and Hyeon-woong, however, she seems to know exactly what sort of people their elders are and what sort of evils they commit. She just hasn't had the power to stop it. I'm hoping for a fabulous four to band together, but there is more that could prevent that from happening: family ties, political power bought with money. We'll see. The stage has been well set.

A few of the more minor characters were also filled out this episode so that they aren't blank, villainous pawns. Corruption has reached its claws out and clasped onto so many. It is a vicious monster that the heroes will not have an easy time fighting.

I most look forward to see how seeking revenge affects Dae-cheol and turns him from an average attorney, from a rather apathetic ladder climber, into a man with convictions and a vision for the future.
