[HanCinema's Drama Review] "God's Quiz Season 4" Episode 7

The drama is slowly gaining confidence in regards to the broader personal vendetta storyline. After the opening establishes the unsettling demise of the victim, we get right into Jin-woo and Kyeong-hee discussing personal matters (mostly just the kid Jin-woo' been hanging out with). This then tumbles right into a dangerous confrontation with that guy who looks really rugged and mean.

The storyline in "God's Quiz Season 4" is an an awkward spot. I'm not sure whether there's context to these people that I'm supposed to know. All I can tell for sure is that someone is out to get Kyeong-hee. Never mind the why, I'm not even sure how she's supposed to be subdued here. It's difficult to tell whether Jin-woo and Kyeong-hee are fighting an attempted kidnapping or an attempted murder. It looks like a murder, but a kidnapping would make more sense since killing cops outright tends to be a pretty dumb idea.

Before we can actually get into much serious exploration of this prompt, though, it's right back to the kid with the weird eyes and his mysterious backstory and how all of this happened. As a mystery, I suppose the construction is decent. At the opening I wasn't really sure why the guard was so freaked out- the eyes made the corpse look like a doll. But that's the main clue that ends up pushing everything forward.

Beyond just the bare minimum requirements of a mystery though, I didn't really feel much interest. Even though Jin-woo and Kyeong-hee have a lot of focus, I find I know increasingly little about any other member of the team. I can't say with any special confidence what particular function any of the individual members actually serve. They just talk medical stuff, do exposition for awhile, and eventually solve the case. It's all perfectly functional. The problem is that it's not really particularly exciting from a narrative standpoint.

Maybe it's easier to view the broader plot as just being a bigger mystery that will eventually be solved in the final episode. Even in this case though I'm not really sure what to think. Writer Park Jae-beom-I is very hit and miss with these mysteries. Sometimes they're well constructed, reasonably engaging, and even innovative. Other times they're just generic, and it's largely the production values that keep "God's Quiz Season 4" watchable. So if the drama writ large is on the same trajectory...well, I guess we won't know that until it happens, anyway.
