Gwangju film fest to open on September 2

The fourth edition of the Gwangju International Film Festival (GIFF) is scheduled to be held this year from Septemer 2-11 in the southwestern city of Gwangju (formerly Kwangju).

Opening the event will be Japanese director WATANABE Kensaku's Loved Gun, a love story between a hired killer and a client. The closing film will be veteran director Bae Chang-ho's "Road", about a blacksmith in the 1970s who makes a discovery about his troubled past. The film features the director himself in the lead role.

Featured retrospectives will be devoted to contemporary Chinese cinema; Jean-Marie Straub and Daniele Huillet; Michelangelo Antonioni; "The Golden Age of Widescreen", featuring various widescreen classics from the 1950s to 1970s; and "A Korean Actor in Shanghai", featuring Chinese films from the 1930s that star the Korean actor KIM Yeom.

Other sections include "Young Cinema", "World Cinema Best", "Nonfiction Cinema", "Outdoor Screenings", and "Korean Cinema Now", which will include the Korean films Repatriation, Don't Believe Her, The Wolf Returns, Woman is the Future of Man, Someone Special, and Hi Dharma 2: Showdown in Seoul.

This year's event has been timed to coincide with the Gwangju Biennale, one of the nation's premiere art festivals, which opens on September 10.
