Girls' Generation, KARA Capture New Artists Awards in Japan

Korean girl groups Girls' Generation and Kara won top honors at the 25th Japan Gold Disc Awards. Both groups were named as one of the Best New Artists and received the New Artists of The Year awards.

Established in 1987, the awards are given based on the number of albums sold, less those returned, between Jan. 1 and Oct. 31.
Girls' Generation had a stellar year in Japan with virtually every release becoming a hit. They made their Japanese debut in September last year with "Genie", which sold 112,724 copies. Their next single "Gee" sold 60,000 copies in just one week, topped Japan's Oricon Chart, and sold more than 120,000 copies by the end of October. Single "Hoot" sold 18,232 copies, and the DVD "New Beginning of Girls' Generation" 81,034.
Kara debuted in Japan in August with "Mister", and the accompanying hip-thrusting dance became a huge hit. The album "Kara Best 2007-2010" sold 50,000 copies in its first week, while the group's follow-up singles "Jumping" and "Girls' Talk" sold 85,506 and 142,596 copies.
Both Girls' Generation and Kara set records as the top selling foreign female musicians in Japan, and took home New Artists of The Year awards after just two or three months of album sales.
Meanwhile, Korean boy band TVXQ, which recently suspended activities in Japan, again proved its popularity there by winning the Best Music Video and Best Album awards for "Video Clip Collection - The One" and "Best Selection 2010".
