Directed by the nation's master director Im Kwon-taek, the film tells a story of the turbulent period of the modern Korean history during conflicts between rightist and leftist parties after the nation obtained independence from the Japanese colonial rule in 1945. Two months after the Korean government was established on Aug. 15, 1948, a leftist breaks out with uprising in Yosu and Sunchon, South Cholla Province, which deepened conflict between rightist and leftist forces. A leftist band led by Yom Sang-jin occupies a small town and persecutes many of villagers in the name of ideological punishment. But as the uprising forces weaken, the band retreats to Mt. Chogye. To regain control of the town, police and other rightist forces crack down on leftist sympathizers and their families. The new minister of culture and tourism Kim Myung-gon plays Yoen in the film.
