December Market Share of Korean Movies Lowest in 4 Years

In December 2004 Korean movies recorded a market share of 16.5 percent, the lowest since June 2000, when it dropped to 15 percent. But the average market share of Korean movies for 2004 as a whole was 55.2 percent thanks to the advertising effects of "Taegugki" and "Silmido" in the beginning of the year.

IM Pictures, a movie investment company, found that the market share of Korean movies in December 2004 stood at 16.5 percent, down 30.2 percent from the 46.7 percent recorded in same period a year ago. The total number of moviegoers who watched Korean movies in December was 642,390 people, which is only a third of the 1.994 million viewers recorded last year. IM Pictures cites the failure of promising movies to lure more viewers and the sluggish results of movies from the previous year as the reasons behind the decline.

In fact, Sidus' ambitious movie "Rikidozan", starring Seol Kyung-koo, attracted only 390,000 moviegoers in Seoul since its opening on Dec. 15. As other movies postponed their opening until after "Rikidozan", the Korean movie industry as a whole recorded a lackluster performance.

"There have been fewer viewers in 2004 due to the economic slump and the extremely low season that has lasted since September", said a person close to IM Pictures.
