D-War Opening Weekend at the US Box Office

Shim Hyung-rae's big budget monster film "D-War" opened in the 5th position at the US box office, grossing a 3-day total of US $5,041,239 according to Box Office Mojo. Let loose by Freestyle Releasing on 2275 screens nationwide, a record number for a Korean film, it easily surpassed "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... And Spring" (US$2.3 million) to become the highest grossing Korean film of all time in the US market.

While critical reception in the US has been almost unanimously in the negative, the film's CGI special effects and monster thrills appeal to a younger audience. The English-language film, shot both in LA and at studios in Korea, is officially budgeted at US$33 million, making it the most expensive Korean film ever produced. Even so, the actual budget is rumored at more than US$75 million, when costs to develop homegrown CGI technology at SHIM's Younggu Art Studio are included.

It was released locally on July 25 and still holds a place at the Korean box office in the number 10 spot as of September 17. Having thus far raked in 8.25 million admissions at home, it is the 5th best selling Korean film of all time.
